Reflecting on Day 21 LinkedIn Challenge: Emotional Intelligence, DISC, and Self-Awareness in Leadership

As part of my LinkedIn Challenge, where I’ve been reflecting on leadership principles daily, today I’m diving into the powerful connection between emotional intelligence, DISC, and self-awareness. Years ago, when I started reading Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Jean Greaves and Travis Bradberry, it felt like I’d been given a strong shot of caffeine—it woke me up to the importance of understanding not only my emotions but also how they impact others. This self-awareness is foundational for effective leadership, and it’s what allows us to lead authentically and adapt to different communication styles.

Later, as a consultant and trainer, I discovered the DISC model, and the connection between EI, DISC, and self-awareness became clear. DISC helps identify natural tendencies—Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness—while emotional intelligence, particularly self-awareness, helps us adjust our responses in a way that resonates with others. Together, these tools create a powerful synergy for empathetic and adaptable leadership.

One of the key takeaways from blending EI, DISC, and self-awareness is the ability to recognize not only how we naturally respond to situations, but also how others may perceive us. A leader high in Dominance might be seen as efficient, but could come across as overly direct or even abrasive to those with more Steadiness traits. By being self-aware, we can recognize how our communication might affect others and adjust accordingly, creating more meaningful and productive interactions.

Self-awareness also helps us identify when our own emotions or stress might cloud our judgment. Practicing emotional intelligence in leadership means taking that pause—understanding our internal triggers before we react—and considering how our words and actions will be received. This reflection creates space for empathy, better decision-making, and clearer communication.

For me, it’s this combination of emotional intelligence, DISC, and self-awareness that has shaped the way I lead. Being aware of my own emotional state and understanding the diverse personalities around me has allowed me to connect more deeply, motivate more effectively, and guide teams toward better outcomes.

How do you practice emotional intelligence and self-awareness in your leadership?
