Self-Awareness: The Secret to Stronger Leadership with DISC
As leaders, we each have our own way of communicating, making decisions, and guiding our teams. Some of us are quick to take action, while others prefer to dive into the details before moving forward. These natural tendencies are part of who we are—but understanding them is the key to becoming a stronger, more effective leader.
That’s where self-awareness, paired with the DISC model, comes in. DISC helps us identify our dominant leadership style—whether we’re Dominant (D), Influential (I), Steady (S), or Compliant (C). Each style has its strengths and its challenges:
• Dominant (D) leaders are driven and results-oriented but may need to work on listening and collaboration.
• Influential (I) leaders bring energy and enthusiasm but might need to improve their focus and organization.
• Steady (S) leaders create harmony but sometimes avoid tough conversations.
• Compliant (C) leaders value accuracy and precision but could benefit from being more flexible and adaptable.
Self-awareness is about more than just knowing your own tendencies—it’s about understanding how those tendencies impact others. By becoming more aware of your DISC style, you can improve your interactions, strengthen your relationships, and build a more engaged and motivated team. As I explored in my Morning Coffee Exchange article, the more self-aware you are, the more effectively you can lead.
So, what’s your DISC type? Have you explored how self-awareness can shape your leadership? If not, now’s the perfect time to start reflecting on how understanding yourself can help you become a better leader.
