My Experience Speaking at the WOC Conference: Finding Peace in a Stressful World

Attending the WOC Conference was an incredible honor, but speaking on a topic as universal as anxiety made it truly memorable. My presentation, "Less Stress Equals More Peace: Strategies to Overcome Anxiety and Cultivate Confidence," addressed how the pressures we face — both external and internal — can fuel stress and hinder our growth. Here’s a glimpse into my journey, from preparation to the moment I took the stage.

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety often stems from external pressures, self-imposed expectations, negative self-talk, and the fear of the unknown. During my talk, I explored these causes, highlighting how perfectionism and comparing ourselves to others can make us feel overwhelmed. Recognizing these triggers is the first step toward overcoming them.

Strategies for Overcoming Anxiety

I shared practical strategies with the audience that have personally helped me, such as:

  • Challenging negative self-talk: Is it based on fact, or is it an irrational assumption?

  • Embracing the power of 'yet': Instead of saying "I can't," reframing it as "I can't yet."

  • Building confidence: This includes acknowledging fears, setting realistic goals, focusing on strengths, and celebrating small wins.

Cultivating Confidence Through Self-Awareness

Confidence doesn’t come from avoiding fear but from embracing it. I encouraged attendees to ask themselves, "What can I learn from this?" Developing a growth mindset, where setbacks become learning opportunities, is key to long-term success and peace of mind.

Power of Community

The Power of Community

As I stood before a room full of empowered women, I was reminded of the importance of community. Whether through family, friends, or online groups, surrounding ourselves with supportive people helps build resilience and peace. Sharing experiences with others allows us to reflect on our strengths and see challenges from a fresh perspective.

My Personal Journey to Peace

Speaking about anxiety is personal for me. From the stage fright I felt with my third-grade students' performance to joining Toastmasters, each step pushed me out of my comfort zone. Over time, I’ve learned to practice what I preach: focusing on my strengths, celebrating wins, and reminding myself to be real, even in the most stressful situations.

Final Thoughts

Participating in the WOC Conference was more than just a speaking opportunity — it was a reminder of how far I’ve come in my journey to cultivate peace and confidence. I left the event with renewed inspiration, grateful for the connections made and eager to continue sharing these strategies with others.
