Please Help, I'm Drowning

October 07, 2026•2 min read

"Just make it work."

That’s the slogan middle managers hear right after two team members leave, budgets get slashed by 20%, and corporate doubles their quarterly targets.

Middle managers are caught in a brutal vise grip. From above, leadership demands higher output with fewer resources. From below, their team is burning out and begging for help. So what does the middle manager do? They absorb the shock. They work 70-hour weeks, answer emails at 11 PM, and run on pure caffeine and adrenaline.

They try to be a hero, but they're actually just drowning in slow motion.

A shrinking organization that relies on middle managers sacrificing their health to stay afloat isn't running a business, it's running an extraction operation.

The Resilience Reality Check

Middle managers aren't shock absorbers for bad strategy. When leadership refuses to adjust expectations to match actual capacity, the entire system eventually snaps.

Here is how a resilient manager stays afloat and leads through resource constraints:

  • Stop hiding the structural deficit: When you work late every night to cover a staffing shortage, you hide the real problem from executive leadership. Let the system show its limits so senior leadership is forced to make real resource decisions.

  • Ruthlessly prioritize scope: You cannot do 100% of the work with 60% of the team. Sit down with senior leadership and force explicit choices: "Here are the 3 things we will deliver, and here are the 2 things we must pause."

  • Protect your own battery first: You cannot lead a team to safety if you are fainting from exhaustion. Set hard boundaries on your time and energy.

  • Advocate for sustainable capacity: Real resilience isn't about enduring endless pressure, it's about building an operational structure that allows people to perform well without burning out.

Stop sacrificing your people to cover up broken strategy.

Stay patched,

Nagham
